| For Immediate Release July 3, 2001 UNCA's Concerts on the Quad Wraps Up July 9 with Cookout and Performances by Scott Ainslie and Glenis Redmond UNC Asheville’s Concerts on the Quad entertainment series season finale brings blues guitar master Scott Ainslie and compelling professional poet Glenis Redmond to center stage at 7 p.m. July 9, on UNCA’s main quadrangle. The performance is free and open to the public. Described as a magnificent musician and a mesmerizing historian, Ainslie’s music presents the African roots and American diversity of North Carolina’s own Piedmont blues style. Redmond brings her poetry to life, making words dance, sing, weep and laugh as they tell tales from her life, her family and her African American heritage. After individual performances, Ainslie and Redmond will join to perform selections from their recent production, "Southern Voices: Black, White and Blues." The public is invited to join the Asheville Area UNCA Alumni Chapter on the Quad before the concert for a cookout. The menu includes hamburgers, hot dogs, Garden Burgers and all the fixings. Adult plates are $6 and children’s plates are $3. UNCA’s Summit Orientation Program student leaders will also be selling drinks and snacks each week during the performances. Now in its 19th season, UNCA’s Concerts on the Quad brings fun to the entire family. The public is invited to bring picnics, blankets and lawn chairs as they relax on the quad. With between 500 and 2,000 people attending each concert, lawn-chair seating will be separate from blanket seating in order to preserve sight lines. In case of rain, the concert will be held in Lipinsky Auditorium, which has limited seating. Due to campus road construction, handicap access to the Quad from Lipinsky Hall is partially obstructed. For alternate access directions, please call Barbara Halton at 828/251-6674.
