Prominent Human Rights Leader Henry Thiagaraj to Visit UNCA April 12-13

Prominent Indian human rights leader Henry Thiagaraj will visit UNCA April 13-14. All events are free and open to the public.

Thiagaraj will discuss "Human Rights for the Untouchables" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, in UNCA's Humanities Lecture Hall. He will discuss "Caste System and Class Conflict in India" at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 13, in the Private Dining Hall.

Thiagaraj is recognized internationally as a human rights maverick. He is the founder and director of the Dalit Liberation Education Trust (DLET) in Chennai, India. DLET creates social, cultural and economic development for the Dalits, more than 200 million Indians who have been forced to live in dehumanizing conditions because of their caste.

Thiagaraj's visit is sponsored by UNCA's Africana Studies Program, Cultural and Special Event Committee, Political Science Department, Humanities Program and Amnesty International Chapter in cooperation with Western Carolina University's Lectures, Concerts and Exhibition Series, Visiting Scholar Series and the Asheville Chapter of Amnesty International.
