| For Immediate Release May 2, 2000 N.C. Center for Creative Retirement Hosts Exploration Weekend May 26-28 The North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement at UNCA will sponsor its sixth annual Creative Retirement Exploration Weekend May 26-28. This program of lectures, discussions and guided bus tours is designed to help people explore the important issues involved in moving to any new community upon retirement. Topics will include how to evaluate Western North Carolina housing options; culture, health care and educational opportunities; recreation and volunteer choices; and a region's economic and environmental quality of life. The program will be held on the UNCA campus, with several tours to towns in Western North Carolina. "The North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement really has a three-fold purpose -- to encourage lifelong learning, leadership and community service among older adults," said Ron Manheimer, center director. "In that role, we help to educate retirees on making appropriate choices about communities, homes and lifestyles." The program averages about 150 participants annually, with about 20 participants moving to the Western North Carolina area each year. Newcomer retirees who do choose to move to Western North Carolina tend to be well-educated, and donate hours and expertise to local schools and civic organizations, Manheimer said. "This weekend helps them to better know the community before they move here, but the program can help all participants make informed decisions no matter what geographic area they choose." Fee for the Retirement Weekend is $175, which includes most meals. The Center's Web site <www.unca.edu/ncccr/ provides more information. To register for the Weekend, call the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement at 828/251-6140.
