| For Immediate Release January 12, 2000 UNCA Center for Jewish Studies Hosts Poet Peter Cole on February 1 Award-winning poet Peter Cole will present three programs on Tuesday, Feb. 1 at UNCA. The talks are free and open to the public. Cole will first speak on "Spains, Plains and Breakfast: Or, Where Poems Come From" at 12:15 p.m. in Lipinsky Auditorium. At 3:15 p.m. he will give an informal discussion on "A Translator’s Ten Commandments" in the Laurel Forum of Karpen Hall. At 7 p.m. Cole will present "Hymns and Qualms," a reading from his own and translated work in the Laurel Forum of Karpen Hall. Cole is the author is two collections of poetry, "Rift" and "Hymns and Qualms." His books of translation from medieval and contemporary Hebrew include "Selected Poems of Shmuel HaNagid," "Love and Selected Poems of Aharon Shabtai," and "From Island to Island" and "Qasida" by Harold Schimmel. Cole has received numerous awards for his poetry and translation, including the M.L.A. Scaglione Prize, the G.E. Foundation Award for Younger Poets, fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts, the Marie Syrkin Award, and the Gerbode Prize for Poetry.
