| For Immediate Release September 26, 2000 UNCA Music Department Continues Fall Concert Season Classic jazz, soulful gospel and traditional Indonesian percussion highlight the UNCA Music Department's October concert series. All events are open to public. -- The legendary Loonis McGlohon Trio, one of America’s most beloved jazz groups, will appear concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, at UNCA’s Lipinsky Auditorium. McGlohon is well-known composer whose pieces have been recorded by Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney and many more. The McGlohon Trio appears on stage at major jazz festivals and frequently performs at the McGlohon Theater in downtown Charlotte, which is named for him. Appearing with McGlohon will be Bill Stowe on drums and Terry Peoples on bass. This benefit concert for UNCA’s Music Department is sponsored by Kawai America Corp. A $10 donation will be suggested at the door. -- The Gospel Extravaganza 2000 will inspire audiences at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, in UNCA’s Lipinsky Auditorium. The concert will feature UNCA’s Ebony Ensemble as well as the music of the gospel choirs from East Tennessee State University, Wake Forest University, Furman University and the young adult choir from Asheville’s Hill Street Baptist Church. The event is co-sponsored by UNCA’s Music Department, Office of Multicultural Student Programs and the African-American Student Association. A $5 donation to benefit UNCA’s Music Department will be suggested at the door. -- The Western Carolina University Gamelan Ensemble Kyai Tatit Ratri, directed by WCU professor Will Peebles, will perform traditional Indonesian music at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22. The gamelan is the percussion orchestra of Indonesia, but the instrumentation and repertory varies from island to island and from town to town. The ensemble will perform on a central Javanese slendro gamelan and a Sudanese gamelan degung. The concert will feature Brad Ulrich on Lou Harrison’s Bubaran Robert for Javanese gamelan and piccolo trumpet. Other contemporary and traditional pieces will be performed as well. After the concert, the audience will be invited to the stage to experience the instruments hands-on. A $5 donation to benefit UNCA's Music Department will be suggested at the door.
