| For Immediate Release February 23, 2000 Women Inspiring Women -- Exhibition of New
Non-Traditional Textile An exhibition of non-traditional fiber art by 10 Asheville-based artists will open Friday, March 3, at Ramsey Library on the UNC Asheville campus. The show, "Image to Image: Woman to Woman -- Inspired Textile Work," is the creation of L.I.N.T. (Ladies in New Textiles), a women's artist group formed in 1996. For the exhibition, each member of L.I.N.T. selected a woman artist as a source of inspiration for a new piece of textile art. The exhibition, part of the Women's History Month Celebration at UNC Asheville, will run through March 31. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. March 3, in Blowers Gallery, Ramsey Library. The exhibition includes the work of Heather Allen, author of "Weaving Contemporary Rag Rugs" and Penland School instructor, who just completed a year-long project for the Biltmore House; Norma Bradley, creator of "Earth quilts" across the Southeast, several of which were featured in Southern Living magazine; Paula Callaghan, who specializes in art quilts and just completed a commission by Asheville's Memorial Mission and St. Joseph's hospitals; Peggy DeBell, a mixed media and textile artist who also creates clothing; Diana Denardis, an innovative quilter involved in the Asheville Quilt Guild; Suzanne Gernandt, whose work is noted for its bold graphic and complex surface designs; Caroline Manheimer who crafts hand-dyed cloth into quilts of simple abstract shapes; Janice Maddox, who learned traditional quilt making in the North Carolina mountains and now creates contemporary quilts shown nationally; Bernie Rowell, whose painted canvas quilts can be seen at Blue Spiral Gallery and the Folk Art Center in Asheville; and Pat Samuels, whose richly embellished work has been featured in several Lark books. DeBell, Gernandt, Maddox, Manheimer and Rowell are all members of the prestigious Southern Highland Handicraft Guild. For Ramsey Library hours, call 828/251-6546.
