Archaeological Institute of America Lecture Scheduled for March 30

Aztec human sacrifice will be the focus of a talk at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, at Pack Place in downtown Asheville. Patricia Anawalt, director of the Center for the Study of Regional Dress at UCLA's Fowler Museum of Cultural History is guest speaker. The talk will be held at Pack Place Forum, adjacent to the Colburn Gem and Mineral Museum. Admission is $5 and free to students and Archaeological Institute of America members.

Anawalt will discuss the varying ritual contexts in which ceremonial victims were sacrificed. She will also examine the modern views of the underlying motives that prompted this highly ritualized behavior and how these present-day explanations have changed over the past 50 years.

The talk is sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America and co-sponsored by the UNCA’s Humanities Program and the Department of Classics.

For more information, call Michael Jones, UNCA Department of Classics, at 828/251-6294.
