UNCA Celebrates Homecoming February 14-20

Two basketball double headers and a campus homecoming parade will highlight UNCA’s Homecoming 2000 Celebration February 14-20.

Some 20 campus events will be held during the week-long celebration, which kicks off today with a student games night and voting for homecoming king and queen.

High Point and UNCA face-off on Friday, Feb. 18, in nationally televised games. The women play at 6:30 p.m followed by the men at 9 p.m.. The homecoming court will be presented at half-time of the men’s game. Both games will be played in UNCA’s Justice Center and admission is $6 adults, $4 children.

UNCA’s fourth annual homecoming parade is set to roll at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, beginning at Owen Hall and proceeding to the Dining Hall. Chancellor Mullen and his family will serve as Grand Marshals.

Special reunions for Alumni of Color, Highsmith Center Lounge; University Ambassadors alumni, Lipinsky Hall; education alumni, Zageir Hall, math alumni, Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall; and Huns alumni, Private Dining Hall will be held following the parade.

The men’s and women’s teams go to battle against Coastal Carolina on Sunday, Feb. 20, in the Justice Center. The women play at 2 p.m. followed by the men at 4:30 p.m. Admission is $6 adults, $4 children.

Anita Singelton-Prather, a native of the Beaufort, S.C. sea islands, will present a monologue performance of Gullah stories at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, in Lipinsky Auditorium. She will be joined by Gullah Kinfolk, a choral group specializing in plantation melodies. The event is free and open to the public.

Several special events have been scheduled for students, including a pep rally and bonfire, a battle of bands, poetry readings and a dance program, including mountain clogging and a step show, a traditional African-American clogging style infused with dance movements.

The week wraps up with a homecoming dance and presentation of the homecoming court.
