An installment entitled "Facing Human Rights," featuring black-and-white photography from the Mother Jones International Fund for Documentary Photography will be on view in UNCA’s Blowers Gallery in Ramsey Library through Nov. 29. Photos in the exhibition include those by Ray Onwauemegbulem showing the brutality of Nigeria’s past military dictatorship and those of Heidi Bradener depicting the war in Chechnya.

"These photographs document the often harsh conditions that much of humanity lives in. They help us put a face on human rights, showing it not as an abstraction but at the experience of people who live in difficult and often brutal situations," said UNCA Associate Political Science Professor Kenneth Betsalel.

Mark Gibney, UNCA Humanities Program Belk Professor, agrees. "There is a tendency to see human rights simply in terms of civil and political rights, even though most human rights violations in the world are much more about social, cultural and economic rights. These photographs dramatically bring this point home."
