| For Immediate Release November 1, 2000 UNCA's Center for Jewish Studies to Host Best-Selling Author Stephen Dubner in Earl Schrier Memorial Lecture Nov. 14 UNCA’s Jewish Studies Program will host a talk and book signing by best-selling author Stephen Dubner at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 14, at UNCA’s Owen Conference Center. Dubner’s talk is made possible by a gift from Rosalie Schrier in memory of her husband Earl Schrier, a leader in the Asheville Jewish community and a founder of UNCA’s Center for Jewish Studies. The event is free and open to the public. Dubner’s talk will focus on his critically acclaimed book "Turbulent Souls: A Catholic Son’s Return to His Jewish Family." The book is based on a cover story he wrote for New York Times Magazine, which became one of the most widely discussed stories in the history of the publication. Jack Miles, author of "God: A Biography," said of the book, "I have never read a conversion story that was also a love story, but Stephen J. Dubner has written one. I couldn’t put it down." Dubner, an accomplished journalist, has served as editor of New York Times Magazine and New York Magazine. He holds a master’s degree from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University. Following the talk, a reception will be held in honor of the memory of Earl Schrier.
