Frithjof Bergmann to Speak on New Work at UNCA March 21

University of Michigan philosophy professor Frithjof Bergmann will speak on "The Theory, Practice and Global Implications of New Work" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, in UNCA's Laurel Forum in Karpen Hall. The talk is free and open to the public.

Bergmann, who developed his labor theories while helping laid-off auto workers find new careers, is founder of the Center for New Work. The center's goals include improving the lives of the poor and unemployed through economic innovation. His approach integrates environmental, technological, economic and philosophical principles into a practical plan for creating meaningful work with profound implications for sustainable growth.

"The mission of the Center for New Work is to develop practical solutions to the present crisis in the world of work," Bergmann said. "The new technology comes towards us like a large wave: if we do nothing, it could drown us. But if we move with intelligence and skill, the wave could lift us higher than we ever were before."

Bergmann's talk is sponsored by the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement and UNCA's Philosophical Society and Environmental Studies Department.
