| For Immediate Release April 26, 2000 UNCA African-American Student Awards Banquet Held April 25 The UNCA African-American Student Association hosted its annual Awards Banquet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, in Karpen Hall on the UNCA campus. The following awards were presented: The William Highsmith Award for outstanding academic accomplishment and campus involvement, Niambi Hall-Campbell and Joseph Hackett; the Outstanding Commuter Award to the commuter student who has exhibited outstanding involvement on and off campus, Julia Wallace; the Martin Luther King Jr. Award for the student who has made significant contributions toward a more cohesive relationship between students and the university, John Gaither; the Jesse Owens Award for the student athlete who has exemplified academic accomplishment, athletic ability and service to the university, Andre Smith; Outstanding African-American Freshman Award, Denita Gallion and Jamal Mullen; Outstanding African-American Sophomore Award, Tashia Atkinson and Joseph Hackett; Outstanding African-American Junior Award, Krystal Lucas and Terhan McDaniel; and Outstanding African-American Senior Award, Nayo Morgan and Adrian Valdivia. The Malcolm X Faculty/Staff Award was presented to Margaret Vinson, food service worker, for going beyond the call of duty by showing concern for UNCA's African-American students. The Benjamin E. Mays Academic Award (cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better) to Crystal Denise Byers, Carmen L. Canty, Zola Mariama Davis, Andrew Vincent Hainsworth, Edwin Marasi Mwencha, Tuesda S. Roberts, Brook Helen Thompson and Roland Brodas Williams Jr. The Mary McLeod Bethune Academic Achievement Certificates (3.0 grade point average or better during the Fall 1999 semester) to Mark Ackerman Jr., Crystal Denise Byers, Carmen L. Canty, Leonard Casey, Karen Chapman, Vanessa Davis, Zola Mariama Davis, Annie Demps, Andrew Vincent Hainsworth, Niambi Hall-Campbell, Tiffanie Hazel, Tialeta Hill, Angela Jackson, Krystal Lucas, Timothy Means, Edwin Marasi Mwencha, Omosalewa Oyelaran, Kimberly Parks, Shanta Robinson, Christy Scott, Avery Smart, Kenya Smith, Charmie Tate, Brooke Helen Thompson, Tuesda S.
