UNCA FACULTY SCHOLAR

This is the eighth in the second series of informal profiles of UNCA's many noted faculty scholars. Written by John Stevens, chief research officer, each of the weekly profiles will highlight the scholarly accomplishments and interests of faculty colleagues. We hope that you will find these profiles of interest as we celebrate the intellectual vigor that is at work on our campus.

Dr. Scott Walters
Dr. Scott Walters

Scott E. Walters
Scott Walters, Assistant Professor in the Drama Department, is Program Director of UNCA's Arts and Ideas. Scott came to UNCA five years ago having received his Ph.D. from the City University of New York. His intense interest in the theater began during his high schools days when he and several of his friends established and organized their own theater group in his hometown, and produced several community plays.

Dr. Walters has prepared for McGraw-Hill helpful publications, including instructor's manuals for Edwin Wilson's 8th Edition of "The Theater Experience" and is completing a second one for the "Theatre: The Lively Arts." Another useful publication is "The Theatergoer's Guide." A book, titled "Introduction to Play Analysis," co-authored with Calvin Pritner, is scheduled for publication within the year. Recent scholarly national conference presentations have been the result of his exploring the teaching of drama in prisons. The title of these are "Heroes Behind Bars: Turning Prison into the Hero's Welcome" and "Taking the Hero's Journey in Prison." In addition, Dr. Walters' is devoting a great deal of his research time to the areas of inquiry-based learning and the use of discussion in teaching.
