Union |
The
Campus Community is invited to attend the dedication of the
long-awaited Highsmith University Union at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct.
14, 2004, in Highsmith's University Commons, on the ground floor.
University of North Carolina President Molly Corbett Broad will join
UNC Asheville Chancellor Jim Mullen and Student Government
Association President Porscha Yount for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Other
festivities on Thursday include grand openings at UNCA Outdoors and
Bike Shop, open houses at the SGA office and Career Center, the free ice cream,
temporary Bulldog tattoos, commemorative photos, live music and much
more. Click here for
a schedule of the entire week's events.
Highsmith
University Union is named in honor of the late William E.
Highsmith,
who led the University of North Carolina Asheville during decades of
growth and challenge, first as president of Asheville-Biltmore
College beginning in 1962 and then as chancellor of UNC Asheville
from 1969 until 1984, when he retired. He presided over the
challenging years of the institution’s expansion from a small,
two-year college to one of the 16 senior institutions in The
University of North Carolina.
A
display about Highsmith's work and life will be on view at the
Highsmith University Union Art Gallery, with the gallery opening
scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 14.
The
Highsmith University Union is the first of five campus projects
funded by the statewide 2000 Higher Education Bond Referendum.
Planning for the new building began in the mid-1990s, but the
project did not become a reality until funding was made available
through the referendum. Of the $15.5 project cost, $11.5 million was
funded through the referendum.
