Swine Flu Update
Dear Students,
We are pleased to announce that UNC Asheville has received a supply of H1N1
vaccine from the Buncombe County Health Center. We only have received the
nasal spray vaccine since the injectible vaccine is not available at this
time.
All UNC Asheville students between the ages of 17 and 49 are eligible to
receive the H1N1 vaccine free of charge. Vaccine clinics will be offered at
the Pinnacle in the Highsmith University Union from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on
the following dates:
-- Thursday, November 5
-- Friday, November 6
-- Tuesday, November 10
The CDC has determined that since the nasal vaccine contains a live virus,
certain groups cannot receive it, including pregnant women and adults 50
years and older. In addition, individuals with the following conditions
cannot receive the nasal vaccine, but should wait until the injectible
becomes available.
• Weakened immune system
• Heart disease
• Lung disease
• Asthma
• Kidney or liver disease
• Metabolic diseases such as diabetes
• Anemia or blood disorders
• Guillain-Barre syndrome
• Anyone with certain muscle or nerve disorders (such as cerebral palsy)
that can lead to breathing or swallowing problems.
• Anyone in close contact with a person with a severely weakened immune
system.
• Individuals who have a severe allergy to eggs or any other substance in
the vaccine should not get the H1N1 nasal spray vaccine.
We hope that you will take advantage of this free vaccine to make our campus
as healthy as possible. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to
contact Health Services at 828/251-6520.
