Budget Update

To the Campus Community,

Over the past several months, as we continue to navigate this complicated economic landscape, many individuals within our campus community have asked, “How can I help?” It is so wonderful to work in a place where we look within our own community for solutions.

Several individuals and groups have inquired about possible ways for staff and faculty to donate a portion of their salary to a fund that would be reserved for saving people’s jobs at the University.

We have researched this option thoroughly. In light of current laws, regulations, and policies around State employment, we find that this is not possible. The General Assembly is currently considering legislation that would affect these policies, and State agencies have yet to interpret the impact that such regulatory changes will have on State employees. I want to assure you that your University is fully participating in almost daily discussions regarding these matters with our colleague institutions and UNC General Administration.

What we do know is that there already exists several ways to donate to the University in support of student scholarships, as well as various specific departments, programs and activities. In fact, many of you are already taking advantage of these options. I encourage your continued support, as it is especially meaningful during periods of economic constraints.

For those who are considering donating to the University for the first time or who want to know more about how this process works, we will be hosting several voluntary information sessions on campus to help you learn more about how your donations are used and the many options available to you. You will be hearing about them soon.
