UNC Asheville to Host Reading by Affrilachian Poet Frank X Walker
     UNC Asheville will host a reading by Affrilachian poet Frank X Walker at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, in UNC Asheville’s Humanities Lecture Hall. “Affrilachian,” a term coined by Walker, refers to an African-American who lives in Appalachia, and challenges the idea of a homogeneous all-white landscape in the Appalachian region. UNC Asheville Offers LSAT and GRE Prep Class
     Registration is now open for a Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and Graduate Record Examination (GRE) prep classes offered by UNC Asheville's Professional Education Program. Classes will meet on UNC Asheville's campus. » MORE

UNC Asheville Launches Newly Designed Web Site
     UNC Asheville will launch a newly designed Web site (www.unca.edu) on Friday, Feb. 5. The new site, under construction since April 2009, includes a new look as well as a new site structure designed to help users find the information they need quickly. » MORE

UNC Asheville's Black History Month Talk by Lindsay Dunn Postponed
     UNC Asheville's Black History Month talk by Lindsay Dunn scheduled for 12:20 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, has been postponed due to injury. Organizers are working to reschedule the event. A new date will be announced when it becomes available. » MORE

Esperanza Spalding Jazz Ensemble to Perform at UNC Asheville
     Child prodigy turned professional musician Esperanza Spalding will perform with her jazz ensemble at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, at UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium. Spalding, 25, is a composer, bassist, multi-lingual vocalist who has been called “the future of jazz and instrumental music.” Hailed as a performer with “breezy, bubbly vocals,” by The Washington Post, Spalding creates a jazz experience that is not to be missed. » MORE

UNC Asheville’s Center for Jewish Studies Hosts Talk on “What Kind of Jew Was Jesus?”
     UNC Asheville’s Center for Jewish Studies will host a talk on “What Kind of Jew was Jesus? How Texts and Archeology Tell Us a New Story,” by noted religious scholar James Tabor, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at the UNC Asheville Reuter Center. Tabor will explore the historical Jesus within the context of his Jewish first century environment, based on textual and archaeological evidence. The event is free and open to the public. » MORE

Black Mountain Center for the Arts Features Work by UNC Asheville Faculty
     In February each year, the Black Mountain Center for the Arts hosts a show in its Upper Gallery to feature art from one of the local nearby colleges and universities. For 2010 the show will feature works from a dozen artists on the faculty at UNC Asheville. The show will open with a public reception with the artists from 3-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7. » MORE

UNC Asheville to Host Annual Alumni Art Exhibition
     Work by UNC Asheville alumni will be on view from February 5 to March 2 in UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Gallery. More than 40 pieces from a variety of media will be represented, including pastel, paint and ceramic. In addition, several pieces of alumni artwork will be on display in Pisgah House. Participating artists graduated from UNC Asheville prior to 2002. » MORE

     The Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) at UNC Asheville drop-in open house from 3:30-5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, at the RENCI at UNC Asheville Community Engagement Site, located in the Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville. The event is free and open to the public. » MORE


UNC Asheville Department of Atmospheric Sciences to Host Severe Weather Workshop
     Registration is now open for a severe weather workshop hosted by UNC Asheville's Atmospheric Sciences Department. The workshop will be held from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 17, in UNC Asheville’s Robinson Hall, room 125. Presented in cooperation with the National Weather Service Office in Greenville-Spartanburg, S.C., this event will offer scientific presentations to promote awareness, understanding and preparedness for severe weather. The workshop is open to the public, and no prior knowledge of meteorology is required. Cost is $15. » MORE

     UNC Asheville’s Career Center will host a panel discussion on nonprofit careers at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at UNC Asheville’s Highsmith University Union, Mountain Suites. The panel of local experts will address nonprofit opportunities and provide a chance for students to gain professional advice. The event is free and open to the public. UNC Asheville Hosts Print Exhibit by Visiting Artist Kore Loy Wildrekinde-McWhirter;
Yancey County Artist's Work Explores Her Unconventional Childhood

     It is said that art imitates life. But in an upcoming exhibition at UNC Asheville, life imitates art. The show, entitled "redhanded: a songe forre the loste," is an exhibition of 13 prints and poems by Yancey County artist Kore Loy Wildrekinde-McWhirter. The exhibition will be on view from February 5-March 2 at UNC Asheville’s S. Tucker Cooke Gallery. The content of this exhibition may not be suitable for younger audiences. Podcast of the MLK Week Keynote Address by Robert Bullard is Now Available
     A podcast of the Martin Luther King Jr. Week Keynote Address by Robert Bullard is now available. Bullard is the Edmund Asa Ware Distinguished Professor of Sociology and director of the Environmental Justice Resource Center at Clark Atlanta University. He has written 15 books on issues from environmental racism to sustainable development. Bullard was featured in CNN’s “People You Should Know.” In 2008, he was named one of the 13 “Environmental Leaders of the Century” by Newsweek. » MORE

UNC Asheville Hosts Historical Photo Exhibition of Asheville's East End
     “Asheville’s East End Circa 1968,” a photography exhibition by Asheville artist Andrea Clark, is on view through February 26 in UNC Asheville’s Blowers Gallery. The exhibition includes 26 framed black-and-white photographs and a large historical map of Asheville. A reception will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, in the gallery, with a talk by the artist at 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. » MORE

Call for Workshop Proposals to be Offered at the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement
     UNC Asheville’s award-winning North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement is seeking local experts to lead summer workshops. Proposals should focus on a short-term, hands-on learning opportunities for students of all ages. Previous courses have examined computer software, how to buy and use a digital camera, sewing, creating botanical block prints, oil and watercolor painting and stone carving. 17th Annual Organic Growers School for Gardeners, Farmers Takes Place March 6-7
at UNC Asheville

A weekend of workshops for beginning gardeners to advanced commercial growers, the 17th Annual Organic Growers School takes place Saturday and Sunday, March-7, 2010, at UNC Asheville. The event, which is open to the public, provides practical, region-appropriate organic growing and permaculture workshops, homesteading and rural living classes such cooking and stonescaping, as well as a seed exchange, silent auction, and trade show. This year’s school offers 75 sessions each day with topics ranging from beginning gardening to commercial farming to urban homesteading. » MORE

UNC Asheville Hosts Exhibit by Noted Painter Philip Jackson
     "Still Life as Theater," an exhibition of some 30 paintings, drawings and photographs by noted artist Philip Jackson, will be on view at UNC Asheville's Highsmith University Union Gallery through February 2. UNC Asheville Hosts Inaugural National Juried Drawing Exhibition
     UNC Asheville's Art Department and Craft Studies will co-host the inaugural National Juried Drawing Exhibition January 12-February 2 at the S. Tucker Cooke Gallery, located on the first floor of UNC Asheville's Owen Hall. Juror Deborah Rockman, a noted artist, reviewed some 564 entries from 183 artists from across the nation. Just 50 pieces were accepted into the show. An opening reception and awards presentation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, in the gallery. Events are free and open to the public. » MORE

Kiplinger's Ranks UNC Asheville Among the Best Educational Values in Nation
     With the cost of college on the minds of many high school students and parents, a timely survey from Kiplinger's Personal Finance of the nation's 100 best values in public colleges was released this week. The annual list ranks four-year institutions that combine outstanding education with economic value. The survey, published online and in the February print edition of Kiplinger's, ranks UNC Asheville 44th in the nation as a best value for in-state students and 50th in the nation as a best value for out-of-state students. » MORE

Urban Growth Model to Aid Planners, Guide Development
     What might our landscape look like in the near future? More specifically, where has urban growth occurred in the last thirty years, and where is it likely to occur over the next twenty years? Researchers at UNC Asheville and UNC Charlotte, as part of an ongoing Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) project, are conducting analyses that answer these types of questions, and also developing tools to help policy makers and planners understand and manage rapid urban growth. » MORE

As the rise in distance education grows, so does the need for distance assessment. Many online classes require that exams be administered by a qualified proctor. Now, trained proctors at UNC Asheville's Asheville Graduate Center can provide a variety of tests, from post-graduate to professional exams. UNC Asheville Board of Trustees Approves Proposed Tuition and Fee Recommendations for the 2010-11 Academic Year
     The UNC Asheville Board of Trustees approved proposed tuition and fees for the 2010-11 academic year at its meeting Monday, Dec. 7. The recommendation, which now moves to the University of North Carolina Board of Governors for consideration, originated with campus tuition and fee committees, made up of faculty, students and administrators. » MORE

Four Creativity Workshops Offered at North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement
     The North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement will offer a series of hands-on winter workshops on topics ranging from photography to cartooning. The courses, which are open to students of all ages and skills, will take place January through March at UNC Asheville's Reuter Center. » MORE

UNC Asheville-City of Asheville Agreement Sets Stage for New Partnerships;
Joint Launch of RENCI Engagement Site Benefits Region

     The long-standing, informal partnership between UNC Asheville and City of Asheville took a step forward today with the signing of a joint agreement that sets the stage for future collaborations. UNC Asheville Chancellor Anne Ponder and Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy, who signed the agreement, were joined by UNC President Erskine Bowles and city, university and elected officials at the ceremony, held at the Grove Arcade in downtown Asheville. The memo of understanding provides a framework for further collaborations in a number of areas important to the city and the region: environmental sustainability, health and wellness, culture and recreation, economic development and technology, and public safety. >> MORE

The annual guidebook highlights the top 10% of institutions nationally as "cream of the crop colleges and universities." UNC Asheville Earns Top Spot in Fiske Guide to Colleges;
University Named Best Buy for 16 Consecutive Years

     As the 2010 college rankings begin to roll in, UNC Asheville continues to stand with some of the nation's finest colleges. The annual "Fiske Guide to Colleges" released its 2010 list of Best Buys of American and Canadian colleges earlier this month. UNC Asheville is alone among public colleges in Western North Carolina to earn a spot on the list. It is the 16th consecutive year that UNC Asheville has been named a Best Buy. » MORE
