GERTF Design Team
Meeting, 13 Novermber 2002
KH 207, 4:30-5:30 pm
Minutes
Present— Konz, Krumpe, McKnight, Nelms, Ruiz, Spencer, White-Carter, Katz; Pat McClellan, visiting
1. Faculty and Student Forums—Katz reviewed the major issues raised in these forums. In the faculty forum, central issues included: a concern about breadth v. depth in the general education program, as well as an objective assessment of components of the curriculum; concern about the benefits and costs of opening up opportunities for students to take electives; interest in pursuing other ways of delivering general education courses. One suggestion was to allow faculty to teach general education courses through topics of interest to them and to students. In the student forums, several issues became clear: transfer students are concerned about the number of general education credits required and the time to degree; UNCA needs to do a better job of clarifying to students (and faculty) the philosophy underlying the liberal arts focus of the institution and its general education program; students are interested in linkages between components of the general education program, especially between the Humanities and the distribution courses. A fuller account of both sets of forums will be up on the web shortly. The Design Team discussed at length the forums and their implications for design.
2. Focus Groups—We will need to have focus groups on at least the following issues: diversity in the curriculum; the writing program; information literacy; a possible topical focus for the distribution or other strategies for collaborative pedagogies; first year or freshman colloquia and possibly senior seminars. The design team will discuss how to prioritize these focus groups, and will email Katz with their ideas.
3. Model Design—Design Team members will team up in pairs to work on models for a revised curriculum that satisfy the Institutional Principles for Design. Members will email Katz the three members they would like to work with, in ranked order; teams will be composed of faculty from different divisions.
4. Freshman Colloquia—Pat McClellan asked team members to email her about their ideas regarding the emerging pilot program, its focus, and title.
