1.
Dr.
Sherry Gale reported on the structure of the SACS project, with an emphasis on
the enhancement side of the effort. She
discussed the relation of the General Education Review Committee to the rest of
the SACS enhancement subcommittees.

Dr.
Gale distributed and took questions on the SACS Executive Committee charge to
the General Education Review Committee.

Dr.
Merritt Moseley spoke about the last general education
review experience, 1983-86.

Katz
handed out copies of the most recently revised mission statement and a Chronicle
article on Duke and Rice experiences in
General
Education Review and Revision, both of which will be discussed at a future
meeting.
5. Katz discussed the upcoming visit by Dr. Scott Lee, Faculty Fellow, American Academy for Liberal Education (AALE) and Principal Investigator for the FIPSE Grant Study on AAssessing Trends in the Liberal Arts Core.@ Dr. Lee is conducting a historical study of changes in liberal arts, general education curricula from 1978-98 at 65 institutions, with on-site interviews at 20 universities and colleges. UNCA is a participant in the FIPSE research grant, sponsored by AALE and carried out under Dr. Lee=s direction. On Wednesday, 15 March, he will meet with our committee in OH 250. Dr. Lee will also meet with other relevant groups on campus, in order to get a bigger picture of general education at UNCA. Katz distributed a copy of Dr. Lee=s letter to Shirley Browning and our committee, outlining his study and its aims; we will discuss this at the next meeting in preparation for his visit.
6. Katz reported that he and Cathy Pons will attend AGeneral Education in the New Millennium: Opportunities, Principles, Politics,@ an AAC&U conference in San Antonio, TX, on 24-27 February. Peg Downes will be presenting a paper there and has agreed to attend some sessions for us, so that we get as broad a coverage as possible. Pons and Katz will report on the conference at a future meeting. Katz also discussed the possibility of funding a conference trip to Charleston in April, where AAC&U is putting on a program about Science Literacy and General Education.
7.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, 1 March, in the Red Oak Room, in
Ramsey Library. The meeting after
that will be on Wednesday, 15 March, in OH 250 (with Dr. Lee).
