EMPLOYEE  EXCELLENCE INSTITUTE

Purpose and Goals

The Employee Excellence Institute is an initiative designed to provide workshops, information sessions and other programs of interest to staff across the 16 campuses of the University of North Carolina via teleconferencing. This initiative was implemented in the month of October, 2006. The sessions are held on Mondays from 12 noon to 12:45 PM. Staff may participate in these sessions in the– Steelcase Telecommunications Classroom (RBH 129). This training is free to each university campus.

Purpose

The Employee Excellence Institute has been established to share expertise held on each campus with colleagues across the system. This expertise may take the form of workshops or a prepared program or it may simply be information sharing. Solutions that work for UNCA may very well benefit one of our sister institutions. The Institute was designed with a thought to fiscal responsibility and convenience for all. An hour a week enables almost everyone access to meetings at sometime. Teleconferencing is a means whereby we may reach many without travel expenses or registration fees. One of the charges of many staff organizations is to advise the Chancellor regarding staff matters of concern. The Institute is being developed to balance this advocacy position with positive-action and creative problem-solving geared toward enabling staff to contribute toward the success of the university community as it seeks to fulfill its mission to educate young minds.

Primary Goals

The FIRST GOAL is to develop a culture of excellence at each of the sixteen member universities which comprise the UNC Higher Educational System. The primary issue that will be placed before employees through The Employee Excellence Institute will be: How can I help create a culture on my university campus that:

Enables me to do a better job,
Empowers me to work more efficiently and effectively,
Prevents incidents of abuse in the work place, and
Encourages me to be a valued and respected contributor to the University community

To answer this central question, it is felt that employees must first define for themselves a “philosophy of excellence.” The Institute will examine ways to promote a university culture in which employees are not “driven” by supervisors but rather are empowered to contribute in ways that may not currently be acknowledged as viable. By so doing, as staff, we will elicit the best from those over and around us, and encourage them to provide the training and support required for us to become dynamic contributors to the functions of the university: research, education and outreach.

The SECOND GOAL is to provide the training necessary for staff to be conscious of the dynamic changes that are occurring in Higher Education today as well as the pressures that are being faced by the leadership on our campuses.

The future of staff in the University of North Carolina System depends on the ability of staff leaders today to ensure that the value of our presence is heightened and recognized throughout the system, as well as, in state government.

Submitted: September 18, 2006

After the meeting with UNC Staff Leaders Advisory Committee on Friday, September 8th, Joanne McKnight met with Clarence Page from NC A&T University regarding the Employee Excellence Institute. It is intended and it will be recommended to the Staff Assembly that this Institute become a standing committee of the Assembly.

The Employee Excellence Institute will provide an opportunity for information exchange among the campuses and it will provide workshops for staff across the UNC system via teleconferencing. September will be used by volunteers from the staff organizations system-wide to brainstorm and complete the task of identifying and organizing sessions. The training sessions themselves will be implemented sometime in the month of October and will be continued throughout the academic school year. The sessions will be held on Monday and Friday from 12 noon to 12:45 PM. Greg Dillingham has made arrangements for these staff training sessions to take place in RBH 129 – Steelcase Telecommunications Classroom. This training is free to each university campus.

The committee responsible for forming the Employee Excellence Institute has requested that the staff advocacy organization on each campus appoint at least one member to attend each session so that there is always a baseline of employees representing the entire university system at each teleconference, discussing issues, discovering solutions and receiving training.

Following are the two initial primary goals of the Institute and limited comments regarding the background out of which the need to establish the institute has arisen.

Background

The Employee Excellence Institute is being established to safe-guard against the staff organizations throughout the system becoming suppositories of “negative” complaint. Although one of the charges of many staff organizations is to advise the Chancellor regarding staff matters of concern, the Institute is being developed to balance this advocacy position with positive-action and creative problem-solving geared toward enabling staff to contribute toward the success of the university community as it seeks to fulfill its’ mission to educate young minds.
