Re:

In-Range Salary Adjustments

On behalf of the Chancellor's Staff Advisory Committee, I would like to make the following announcement.

The Office of State Personnel approved UNCA's policy on In-Range Equity Salary Increases for SPA employees effective June 1, 1999. Chancellor Reed made available $50,000 and salary increases of 5% were awarded to 42 employees.

These increases were based on a formula for "factored salary" which includes a person's education, non-State work experience that is directly related to their current job, and their Total State service. State service is valued at twice as important as education and non-State service. In this formula a mythical "factored salary" is created which represents what a person would be eligible to make if he or she had received a 5% increase above the minimum of their salary grade for each year of education or experience above the minimum requirements for their position. The person's actual salary is subtracted from this factored salary and the difference is how far a person is from their goal factored salary. Increases were given to the 42 individuals who were farthest from their factored salary.

The 42 individuals who received awards ranged from 59% from the factored salary to 39% from the factored salary and were spread across the range of positions, salary grades, and departments. Individuals who received awards had a total of 6,203 months of State service or an average of 12.3 years of State service. The recipients have been notified.

The Chancellor's Staff Advisory Committee would like to thank Chancellor Reed for her efforts to make the in-range salary adjustments possible.

Questions should be addressed to Linda Franklin (Franklin@unca.edu).
