Student Responsibility For Charges
The
University of North Carolina at Asheville attempts to make sure each
student is notified of charges to his/her student account. However,
charges go on at various times throughout each semester depending upon
when the student registers and the student’s particular activity.
Failure to receive a billing statement does not relieve any student from
financial responsibility for charges on their account. It is the
student’s responsibility to monitor their student account and to pay for
any charges on their account in a timely manner. Failure of the
student to pay charges on their account may result in not being able to
register for future classes, not being able to receive a transcript and
being assessed late charges and interest on past due balances.
General Payment Rule
Students are expected to pay by the dates
noted below for any portion of their tuition, fees, room and board that
will not be covered by financial aid, scholarships, Voc Rehab, VA
benefits, or who do not have a payment plan through Tuition Management
Systems.
Billing
Dates
Bills for students who have pre-registered for a semester will be emailed
as follows:
-
Fall semester bills for pre-registered students
will be emailed by July 15th.
-
Spring semester bills for pre-registered
students will be emailed by November 25th.
-
Summer term bills for pre-registered students will be emailed by
April 20.
Payment Due Dates
Pre-registered Students
For students who have pre-registered for the semester they plan to
attend:
-
Fall semester payment for pre-registered students
is due by August 1st.
-
Spring semester payment for pre-registered
students is due by December 15th.
-
Summer term payment for pre-registered students is due by May 20th.
Students Who Are
Not Pre-registered
Students who have not
pre-registered for the semester they plan to attend are required to
pay in full for the classes they intend to take prior to
registering for any classes. These students can get an estimate of
their charges from the Cashier's Office. Be advised that any estimate
given is based on the information provided to the Cashiers and final
charges may be different depending on the student's specific
classification or situation. If the student's charges change the student
is responsible for any difference.
Billing Method
The official billing method of the
University is via email. Billing emails will be sent to the
student' UNCA email address with the bill attached. Students who
will not be paying the bill themselves are responsible for forwarding
the bill to the appropriate party.
Health Insurance Requirement
All undergraduate and graduate students taking 6 or more credit hours are required to have health insurance
coverage. Students can meet this requirement by being covered under
their own individual health insurance plan or through their parents' plan.
Students who have insurance coverage must go to
www.studentinsurance.com, provide information regarding the policy
under which they are covered, and apply for a waiver of the insurance
requirement. Once their insurance information is received, it will be
reviewed and verified. If the insurance coverage is verified, a waiver for the
student will be approved. This waiver will offset the
insurance charge.
Students who fail to apply for the insurance waiver or whose insurance
coverage cannot be verified will be added to a UNC Asheville group
policy and will have to pay the $709.00 charge per semester for the health
insurance, even if
they have existing health coverage.
Tuition Surcharge
The North Carolina
General Assembly imposes a tuition surcharge on those students
initially entering the University of North Carolina system as
undergraduates if they take more than 140 attempted hours to
complete degree requirements. Students seeking a second
baccalaureate degree are allowed attempted hours to 110 percent of
degree requirements before the surcharge is imposed. Students who
exceed the attempted credit hour limits within the equivalent of
four academic years of regular term enrollment, or within five
academic years of regular term enrollment in a degree program
officially designated by the Board of Governors as a five-year
program, are not subject to the surcharge.
The tuition surcharge approved by the
General Assembly is 50 percent of the cost of tuition.

information regarding Tuition Surcharge please visit the Registrar's
website.

The
University of North Carolina at Asheville is a publicly supported
institution. Tuition payments and other required student fees meet
only a part of the total cost of the education of students enrolled.
On average, for each full-time student enrolled in an institution of the
University of North Carolina, the State of North Carolina appropriated
$11,292 per year in public funds to support the educational programs
offered.
The
University of North Carolina Board of Governors adopted a Plan to make
tuition and fee rates for undergraduate North Carolinians predictable
and affordable. Pursuant to the Plan, the maximum rate of annual
increase for undergraduate residents for campus-initiated tuition is
6.5% and the increase in general fees (Athletics,
Health Services, Student Activities, and Educational and Technology
Fees) is 6.5%. Exceptions to the Plan were allowed to help address
academic quality, to partially remedy the cumulative negative impact of
several years of state budget reductions and to help the University
protect the quality of a UNC education. Specific
information, including maximum allowable increases in tuition and fees
per academic year by UNC campuses is available at www.northcarolina.edu/finance/tuition.UG_Resident-projected_tuition.pdf.
Tuition and fee rates included in bills are based on rates approved
by the Board of Governors in February 2012. G.S. 116-11(7) requires
that the Board of Governors set tuition and required fees at the
institutions, not inconsistent with the actions of the General Assembly.
Students and parents can also find detailed information concerning the
total cost of college at
www.cfnc.org.
