Future home of the Craft Campus |
The Craft Campus will provide a much-need
facility for UNC Asheville students pursuing studio crafts, serve as a
national model for green building, and add to Western North Carolina's
$144-million craft economy. The Craft Campus will
be located off campus, near the former Buncombe County landfill. The
University is leasing the 153-acre site from Buncombe County for $1 per
year for 99 years. Methane from the capped landfill will serve as the
primary energy source for the Craft Campus.
The Craft Campus will be built with private
funds. In January 2006, the University was awarded a $2 million
grant from an anonymous national foundation for a wood sculpture studio.
In 2004, the University was awarded a $100,000 grant from the Kresge
Foundation to aid with planning costs for the Craft Campus green
building design. It is the maximum amount the foundation awards through
its Green Building Initiative. Related
