“Johnny Cash symbolizes for me the American popular culture enthusiasm for Israel,” Goldman said. He notes that Cash and wife June Carter Cash made five trips to Israel and that Cash was baptized in the Jordan River. Shalom Goldman is Research Professor of Religion at Duke University. In addition to Zeal for Zion, Goldman has published God’s Sacred Tongue: Hebrew and the American Imagination as well as other books. His next book, forthcoming in 2012, is entitled Demon’s Wager: Conversion, Apostasy, and Modern Jewish Identity. The London Times Literary Supplement described Zeal for Zion as "remarkably fair, clear and informative." Goldman is a contributing editor at Religiondispatches.org, an online magazine devoted to the study of religion and public life.
