Spanish (SPAN)
Assistant Professors Gant, Trautmann, Weldon
A major in Spanish has two objectives. The first is to prepare the student to communicate
and interact in Spanish in an educated and cultured fashion. This ability to communicate is
increasingly important, given the widespread use of Spanish, the second major language in the
United States. The second objective of the Spanish major is to prepare the student for teacher licensure.
Spanish majors will learn the language more proficiently by spending some time
abroad, immersed in the life, language and culture of a Spanish-speaking country. The Department of
Foreign Languages encourages study at foreign universities and, with its approval, students
will readily receive academic credit for foreign study. The department is glad to assist in
advising students who are considering a double major, either in another foreign language or in a field
where the knowledge of Spanish is useful or essential.
Major in Spanish
- Required courses in the major--27 hours in courses numbered 300 or above. Of
these, three courses must be numbered 400 or above. Required: SPAN 310, 320, 440, 485.
- Required courses outside the major--None.
- Foreign language requirement--Satisfied by major courses in Spanish.
- Special departmental requirements--SPAN 485 (the Proseminar) constitutes the
demonstration of oral competency in Spanish and is the exit course for the major
in Spanish.
Spanish with Teacher Licensure
To obtain licensure as a teacher of Spanish (K12), the candidate must complete the
required major in Spanish in the Department of Foreign Languages, the General Education
requirements, and those courses required by the Education Department for K12 licensure. (See
Education section.) The Foreign Language Department also offers endorsements in Spanish (K12) or
912). Students in this program are required to complete licensure in another licensurable subject area
(K12 or 912) and 18 hours of selected courses in Spanish numbered 300 or above. Students
who intend to obtain teacher licensure in Spanish are also required to include SPAN 335 or
an equivalent Special Topics course and SPAN 340 in their major/minor programs.
