2/4/2012 "Caprice" by Vasily Polevoy An exhibition, "Caprice" by Vasily Polevoy, will be held on January 9th-February 28th, 2012. Polevoy's work can be seen throught the former USSR and more recently, his underground paintings from the pre-"glasnost" era have been shown in art galleries in Italy, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Israel and the USA. Polevoy's themes used to put him in one row with the so called "modernistic" and "lacking proper ideological orientation" artists. The style of Vasily Polevoy's works is fantastic and realistic, permeated with kind humor sometimes stretching out to grotesque and caricature with an incredible combination of both trickery and simple-heartedness.

2/6/2012 Conflict: A reading and celebration of Norman Fischer's new book of poetry Norman Fischer is a poet and Zen Buddhist priest. For many years he has taught at the San Francisco Zen Center, the oldest and largest of the new Buddhist organizations in the West, where he served as Co-abbot from 1995-2000. He is presently a Senior Dharma Teacher there as well as the founder and spiritual director of the Everyday Zen Foundation, an organization dedicated to adapting Zen Buddhist teachings to Western culture. Among his many books are Taking Our Places: the Buddhist Path to Truly Growing Up; Sailing Home: Using Homer's Odyssey to Navigate Life's Perils and Pitfalls; Opening to You: Zen-inspired Translations of the Psalms and numerous books of poetry, including Precisely the Point being Made; Slowly but Dearly and I Was Blown Back. He is also the author of Jerusalem Moonlight, a prose memoir about Judaism and Buddhism. Norman Fischer has been particularly interested in the application of Zen to issues of Western culture and everyday life in the world. His Zen essays on topics ranging from racism to monasticism to romance appear frequently in Tricycle, Shambhala Sun and Buddhist Writing. In addition to his regular work at Zen Center and with Everyday Zen, he has taught extensively with his old friend, the late Rabbi Alan Lew, on the relationship between Buddhist and Jewish practice. He is the co-founder, with Rabbi Lew, of Makor Or Jewish Meditation Center in San Francisco. Conflict, Norman Fisher's recently published book-length poem, is an exploration of conflict within the self; conflict between friends, lovers, communities, nations, war and torture. 7:30 p.m., Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall 139 Contact Rick Chess at 828/251-6576.

2/17/2012 The Vagina Monologues VDay, an international organization that strives to end sexual violence against women, has an annual benefit performance of The Vagina Monologues, an award winning play by Eve Ensler. The play is about ninety minutes, and focuses on transnational female experiences with sexuality. The monologues are funny, poignant, and provocative- but there is a balance of comedy and tragedy to suit most audiences. Tickets are $5 for students, $7 for non-students, and all money raised goes to VDay and Ourvoice, a local resource for survivors of sexual assault. -More about VDay- UNC Asheville is proud to be a participant in the V-Day 2012 Campaign. We have been granted the rights for a V-Day benefit production of Eve Ensler's award winning play, “The Vagina Monologues” to raise money and awareness for local as well as international organizations that work to end sexual violence against women and girls. In 2011, over 4,000 V-Day benefit events took place, produced by volunteer activists in 130 countries around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls both locally and globally. In 2012 UNC Asheville will host one of thousands of events around the world, channeling their creative energy into making a difference as part of the V-Day campaign. It is our intention to make V-Day 2012 UNC Asheville a huge success. This will be possible, in large part, through the assistance and generosity of our sponsors. Part of what makes this event so special is the opportunities it offers to businesses in local communities- to participate in this international movement, to celebrate and honor the women and girls in your life and community, to be part of a collective voice, a voice that refuses to be ignored, a voice that says NO to violence against women and girls. We will be donating 90% of the profits from our event to OURVOICE, a local non-profit organization that provides victim advocacy, outreach, intervention, counseling, and education to the women and girls of Western North Carolina. The remaining 10% is sent to VDay.

2/25/2012 "Caprice" by Vasily Polevoy An exhibition, "Caprice" by Vasily Polevoy, will be held on January 9th-February 28th, 2012.
