Mass communication is a field of great opportunity and challenge. New technologies, new laws and new media systems emerge onto the American scene with breathtaking frequency. At some universities, students concentrate on the techniques of producing and transmitting messages to the public. Other programs approach the study of ommunication in a liberal arts context so students will be prepared to meet the unpredictable changes in a field undergoing constant growth and change. At UNC Asheville, we integrate both approaches. That’s why our Department of Mass Communication is unique. It offers courses that provide students with specific skills, as well as an understanding of the principles that make those skills important. As a result, our graduates understand not only the how of communication but also the why.
The curriculum covers the historical, theoretical and technical aspects of many media fields, with courses such as Newswriting, Video Production, History of the American Media and Public Affairs Reporting. Our students work with the latest digital technology in newspaper design and video production. A professional internship program provides motivated students with valuable experience, and a philosophy course examines journalism values and ethical decisions.
The Mass Communication Department offers more than career preparation. At the heart of the curriculum is the philosophy that media studies should not be limited to technical training in any one discipline but must be firmly rooted in the liberal arts. The university’s broad-based academic program will prepare mass communication graduates for careers in management, politics, the arts, advertising, government, the electronic media, print journalism or graduate studies.
The varied backgrounds of the Mass Communication faculty make for a well-rounded department. Professors include the author of a college text on interpersonal communication, an expert on the effects of mass communication on American politics, an advertising and public relations expert, and a specialist in video production and television content. All faculty members hold degrees from top institutions and have experience as media professionals. Local professionals supplement the full-time faculty, sharing their expertise in the media. Because the department offers small classes and an optimum faculty-student ratio, each student has the opportunity to develop their full potential as a communicator.
Mass communication is one of the fastest-growing fields today. In addition to careers in print and electronic media, the field offers students with mass communication degrees an opportunity to pursue positions in public relations, advertising, politics and law. Mass communication is a dynamic and rapidly changing field, and keeping up with the changes in technology and regulations will remain challenging. Graduates of UNC Asheville’s Mass Communication Department, with their broad liberal arts background and specific skills training, will enter the job market of the future prepared to meet that challenge.
